Donghae to Host 'Moonlit Night in Balhan, Drive-in Theater' on the 6th...Recreating 1960s Nostalgia
Donghae City’s Drive-in Theater Draws Enthusiastic Response
“La La Land” to Be Screened at Balhan-dong Community Service Center
Donghae City in Gangwon Province will host the “Moonlit Night in Balhan, Drive-in Theater” at the Balhan-dong Community Service Center public parking lot on March 6 from 7:30 PM to 9:30 PM, as part of the Balhan District urban regeneration project.
This event is being organized as part of the Balhan District Urban Regeneration Revitalization Project. A dedicated drive-in theater area will be set up and operated, accommodating up to 45 vehicles.
The featured film is the musical movie “La La Land.” Following the event’s announcement, the overwhelming interest from citizens led to early closure of advance reservations, demonstrating a strong response.
In the past, Balhan-dong was home to three thriving theaters and is remembered as the cultural heart of the area, bustling with alleyway businesses and crowds during the heyday of Mukho Port.
The city plans to recreate the nostalgia of the past by transforming the former Boyoung Theater—a symbolic venue that brought cultural enjoyment to citizens from the 1960s to the 1990s—into a modern drive-in theater experience in 2026, thus providing a special cultural event that connects the past with the present.
