Daejeon City Invites Applications for Vacant House Demolition Support under the "Vacant House Improvement Project"
Project to Be Implemented Through Two Models: Purchase-Based (Daejeon Model) and Non-Purchase-Based (Ministry of Land Model)
Daejeon City is inviting applications for the "2026 Vacant House Improvement Project," allocating 2.9 billion won to renovate vacant houses that undermine the residential environment.
Currently, there are about 1,300 vacant houses in the Daejeon region. To address this issue effectively, the city will invest project funds and implement two approaches: a purchase-based (Daejeon model) and a non-purchase-based (Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport model) method.
In the purchase-based model, the city directly acquires vacant houses, demolishes them, and then creates public facilities such as parking lots or community gardens. In the non-purchase-based model, the ownership of the land remains with the original owner, but the local district office demolishes the vacant house and temporarily utilizes the site as community facilities for residents. Depending on the owner's circumstances, applicants can choose and apply for either the purchase-based or non-purchase-based model.
In particular, the non-purchase-based model offers tangible tax benefits for vacant house owners. A 50% reduction in property tax is provided for up to five years on the demolished site, and if the land is leased free of charge for public facilities, owners are eligible for a full property tax exemption (tax-free) during the utilization period.
However, since the project must operate within a limited budget, if there are many applicants, the final selection of sites will be based on a comprehensive review of factors such as the age of the vacant houses, urgency, and project costs, with priority given accordingly.
An official from Daejeon City stated, "Abandoned vacant houses pose a high risk of crime and are prone to safety hazards such as fire and collapse. They may also be subject to administrative actions, such as the imposition of compliance fines. As the program may close early once the budget is exhausted, we encourage residents to promptly contact their district office to receive improvement support."
