Miryang City Launches Special Wildfire Prevention Measures for Lunar New Year... Enters Emergency Response System
Assigning One-Sixth of Town and Township Staff... Maintaining an Emergency Work System
Miryang City in South Gyeongsang Province is implementing special wildfire prevention measures for the Lunar New Year holiday period (February 14 to 18), establishing an all-out emergency response system in preparation for an increase in visitors to ancestral graves and mountain hikers.
Over the past 10 years, an average of 1.5 wildfires have occurred in South Gyeongsang Province during the Lunar New Year holiday. The main causes have been identified as trash burning and accidental fires started by visitors to ancestral graves. In particular, as precipitation earlier this year has been lower than in an average year, the risk of wildfires is extremely high.

The Forest Disaster Response Team will mobilize the maximum available personnel to maintain readiness for dispatch both day and night, and will use leased helicopters to conduct intensive patrols of vulnerable areas such as public cemeteries.
The city will also deploy wildfire monitors intensively in areas with many visitors to ancestral graves and strictly restrict the use of fire. It plans to strictly crack down on unauthorized burning in areas adjacent to mountains under a zero-tolerance policy.
Miryang Mayor Ahn Byung-gu said, "During the Lunar New Year holiday, visits to ancestral graves and outdoor activities increase, so even minor carelessness can lead to a large wildfire," adding, "We will make every effort to prevent wildfires so that citizens can spend a safe and peaceful Lunar New Year."
