Public Interest Reflected in User-Friendly Terminal and Other Facilities
As the bird's-eye view of the terminal complex development project that Gwangju Shinsegae Co., Ltd. will introduce in Gwangcheon-dong has been released, public interest is growing. It has especially drawn attention after it became known that the design was inspired by the city’s geographical characteristics and columnar joints to embody the identity of Gwangju.
On February 5, the "Memorandum of Understanding Signing Ceremony for Investment in the Gwangcheon Terminal Complex Development Project" was held at Gwangju Metropolitan City Hall.
On that day, Gwangju Shinsegae released bird's-eye views of a 35-story bus terminal building and a 44-story mixed-use facility to be completed on the Gwangcheon Terminal site by 2033, as well as a new annex of the department store.
The Gwangcheon Terminal complex development project has been undertaken by Arcadis, a Netherlands-based global urban planning and design specialist.
Arcadis is a world-renowned design company operating in more than 30 countries worldwide, and it devoted great effort to developing Gwangcheon Terminal into a landmark that represents not only Gwangju but also Korea.
Arcadis carried out the design work with the goal of creating spaces where individuals and communities can live together in harmony, thereby improving quality of life. To this end, it drew inspiration from the unique atmosphere of the city of Gwangju and the geographical features of Mudeungsan Mountain.
As a result, the company sought to express the skyline of Gwangcheon Terminal by reflecting the geographical characteristics in which the city center of Gwangju forms a basin starting from Mudeungsan Mountain and then extends toward the southwestern coast.
Considerable effort was also made to reflect the identity of Gwangju in the individual buildings. The new annex inspired by the columnar joints of Mudeungsan Mountain is a prime example.
The columnar joints of Mudeungsan Mountain, which inspired the new department store to be built at Gwangcheon Terminal, are a column-shaped rock formation developed near the mountain’s summit and are a representative geological heritage site designated as Natural Monument No. 465 of the Republic of Korea. The columnar joints are not only of geological value but also boast beautiful scenery, making them a destination that people across the country wish to visit at least once.
Gwangju Shinsegae and Arcadis are pushing ahead with the Gwangcheon Terminal complex development project with the aspiration that the new department store, like the towering Mudeungsan Mountain that represents Gwangju, will become such a landmark place.
In addition to the department store inspired by the columnar joints of Mudeungsan Mountain, the complex development project also includes plans to build a commercial mixed-use facility equipped with high-end conference facilities.
