On February 9 (local time), OpenAI announced on its website that it will begin testing advertisements in the United States for free and Go plan subscribers of its generative artificial intelligence (AI) service ChatGPT.
The Go plan is a new subscription service introduced last month. In the United States, it is priced at around 8 dollars per month. In addition, advertisements will not be shown to paying subscribers of the Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Education plans.
Advertisements may be presented based on the context of a user’s conversation and their interactions. For example, if a user searches for a recipe, ads for meal kits or delivery services may appear. During the testing period, no ads will be displayed to accounts that are verified or estimated to belong to users under the age of 18. Ads will also not be shown for sensitive or regulated topics such as physical and mental health or politics.
In response to concerns that ads could influence ChatGPT’s answers, OpenAI stressed, “Ads have no impact whatsoever on ChatGPT’s responses, and conversations with users are kept private from advertisers.”
OpenAI had previously stated last month that it planned to introduce an advertising service. Because of this, it recently came under fire from Anthropic, which provides the Claude service. Anthropic’s recent Super Bowl commercial depicted a situation where a commercial ad is suddenly inserted in the middle of an AI chatbot consultation, criticizing that such ads can break the context of a conversation.
