Lim Dalhee Gongju City Council Chair’s Fan Club Launched... A “Citizen-Created Political Stage”
1,500 Gather in Gongju... A Spontaneous Event Without Mobilization
The Politician as "Guest," Citizens as the Main Actors on Stage
An unconventional political scene unfolded in Gongju, South Chungcheong Province. On February 7, the fan club of Gongju City Council Chairperson Lim Dalhee, named "Shining Gongju," held its inaugural founding ceremony at the Baekje Education and Culture Hall of Kongju National University.
According to the organizers, about 1,500 people filled the seats that day. There were no signs of mobilized groups or orchestrated staging; the venue was filled by the voluntary participation of citizens.
Rather than a podium-centered event resembling an election campaign rally, the event was closer to a cultural festival for citizens to enjoy.
When Chairperson Lim entered, colorful paper airplanes flew up from the audience.
National Assembly member Park Soo-hyun (Gongju, Buyeo, Cheongyang) quoted the poems "Spring Road" by poet Jung Hoseung and "Grass Flower" by poet Na Taejoo, saying, "If there is a path you have walked in silence, I hope that now, based on the trust of the citizens, you will go even farther."
Former Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Do Jonghwan sent a congratulatory message, saying, "I hope that citizens who have gathered voluntarily will become a starting point for breathing new vitality into the local community."
Fan club president Lee Jeongyeol said, "Today is not a gathering for a particular politician, but a promise by citizens to make Gongju a better place," adding, "We will be the light on the path that Chairperson Lim takes."
Chairperson Lim responded, "I will not take lightly the weight of the goodwill you have shown me," and added, "I will listen more closely to the voice of each and every citizen and work even harder for Gongju."
In the talk show that followed, Chairperson Lim recalled her newlywed days and said, "I was able to endure thanks to my wife, who held my hand whenever things were difficult."

A local political insider commented, "It is rare to see a scene where citizens call a politician together, rather than a politician gathering people to show off their support base," and added, "We will have to watch whether this attempt remains a one-off event or becomes an opportunity to drive change in the region's political culture."
