According to Naju City on December 24, Bitgaram Elementary School obtained the Primary Years Programme (PYP) World School certification from the International Baccalaureate headquarters on November 25. To commemorate this achievement, a certification ceremony was held at Bitgaram Elementary School on December 23.
The ceremony was attended by Naju Mayor Yoon Byungtae, Jeonnam Superintendent of Education Kim Daejung, and others, who congratulated the school on obtaining IB World School certification and expressed their commitment to cooperation for the advancement of local education.
Since declaring itself a premium education city, Naju City has systematically supported Bitgaram Elementary School in adopting the IB curriculum from the interested school stage to the candidate school stage and finally to official certification, beginning in 2023. As a result, the school was ultimately selected as an IB World School that meets international standards.
With this certification, Naju City has become the first region in South Jeolla Province to offer the full IB curriculum across all school levels, as the program connects with Naju Geumcheon Middle School, which operates the Middle Years Programme (MYP), and Jeonnam Foreign Language High School, which offers the Diploma Programme (DP).
This achievement is regarded as a significant turning point, as it establishes a foundation for continuous inquiry-based education tailored to each stage of student growth and marks a shift in local public education toward an internationally recognized educational model.
The IB curriculum is a competency-based program that focuses on conceptual understanding and inquiry-based learning, fostering students' critical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and self-directed learning. It is widely implemented in international schools and public education systems around the world.
