Unveiling the Blueprint for Wonju-Style Economic Education City Connecting Future Talent, Industry, and Education
Wonju City in Gangwon Province will hold the final report presentation and Citizen Forum for the “Establishment of the Basic Plan for Building Wonju as an Economic Education City” at Hotel Inter-Burgo Wonju on the 16th.
This event has been organized to share the direction and implementation strategies of the basic plan for building an economic education city with citizens, and to incorporate the opinions of citizens, students, schools, universities, and industry, who are the main stakeholders in policy-making.
This plan was developed based on a wide range of opinions gathered since the start of the research project in April, including a city council meeting, a parents’ forum, in-depth interviews with high schools, universities, companies, and related organizations, discussions within the industrial network, and expert consultations. It is the result of a Wonju-style economic education city strategy, completed with direct citizen participation.
The final report presentation will not be a simple announcement, but will be conducted in the form of a citizen forum with the participation of over 100 representatives from citizens, education, and industry. The structure is designed to ensure that citizens’ opinions are directly reflected in the policy development process.
The forum will consist of the final report by the research team, expert discussions, and citizen participation programs, so that anyone can understand and discuss the policies for the economic education city.
The economic education city is a new vision for Wonju City, aiming to transform education into the core driver of local economic growth and to establish a sustainable urban innovation model by linking the cultivation of future talent with industrial advancement.
The final report will present four key development goals and core strategies for each area, based on an analysis of Wonju’s education, industry, and demographic structure: 1) Linking industrial-based education and establishing an innovation industry network centered on future industries in the era of mega-regions; 2) Innovating the education system and positioning Wonju as a leading city for future talent-friendly education; 3) Building a ONE-Wonju-style one-stop support system for local talent based on educational infrastructure and residential conditions; and 4) Building a global education city with infrastructure to foster global talent based on local industries.
This basic plan is the first official roadmap prepared by Wonju City to systematically implement its mid- to long-term education and talent policies. It reflects the organic connection between future industries such as semiconductors, mobility, and medical devices and education, and is expected to contribute to strengthening Wonju’s competitiveness in the future by aligning with national policies such as education development special zones and RISE.
Won Kangsu, Mayor of Wonju, stated, “This plan is not expert-centered, but a practical strategy based on the opinions of citizens, universities, industry, and schools in the field,” adding, “We will build a leading economic education city model where education is directly connected to the region’s future industries and jobs.”
