Sunmoon University Develops 'In-Wheel Motor Electric Vehicle'... Wins Silver at RISE Capstone Competition
Self-Designed and Built BLDC-Based Vehicle Reduces Motor Overheating
Enhanced Driving Efficiency Receives High Praise
The 'Solluna Team' from the Department of Future Automotive Engineering at Sunmoon University won the Silver Prize at the '2025 Chungnam RISE Shared University Capstone Design Competition' with their self-developed electric vehicle.
According to Sunmoon University on December 4, the competition was held on November 28 at the Cheonan Campus of Kongju National University. A total of 30 teams from 11 universities affiliated with Chungnam RISE Shared University participated, and the event evaluated the driving performance of electric vehicles that each team designed and built themselves.
The 'Solluna Team' consists of four students from the Department of Future Automotive Engineering. To address the limitations of conventional electric vehicle motors, which tend to overheat, the team applied a BLDC (Brushless DC) motor and adopted an 'in-wheel motor system' by placing the motor inside the wheel to drive the vehicle, resulting in a new vehicle design.
This technological application improved power transmission efficiency and increased driving range, earning high marks in the competition.
The Department of Future Automotive Engineering at Sunmoon University is a specialized department dedicated to nurturing key talent for future mobility in the central region. It is expanding collaboration with local companies based on advanced practice environments and field-oriented education.
The department also operates programs for employees of industrial companies, contributing to the regional mobility industry.
