Yongsan District to Launch Full-Scale Restoration of Hyochang Park Graves and Landscape
Securing a Special Grant of 420 Million Won
Restoration to Be Completed in the First Half of Next Year
Yongsan District in Seoul (District Mayor Park Hee-young) is set to launch a full-scale restoration project to preserve the historical significance of Hyochang Park, a sacred site of the independence movement.
Yongsan District has secured a special adjustment grant of 420 million won from the Seoul Metropolitan Government and will carry out the Hyochang Park restoration project in phases. After completing preliminary procedures such as design early next year, the district plans to finish the restoration work within the first half of the year.
Hyochang Park is home to the graves of independence activists, including Kim Koo, and Yongsan District has continuously managed and maintained the site. With the newly secured special grant, the restoration is expected to proceed in a more systematic and professional manner.
The main restoration work includes replacing the wooden fences around the independence activists' graves, repairing and preserving the original form of the Samuisa (Three Martyrs) burial site, maintaining the burial mounds and gravestones, and improving the landscaping and facilities within Hyochang Park.
In particular, the inscription "Yubangbaekse," personally carved by Kim Koo and remaining at the Samuisa burial site, will be preserved in its original form to highlight its historical and symbolic value. The cenotaph of Ahn Jung-geun will also be restored to improve its preservation status.
Park Hee-young, Mayor of Yongsan District, stated, "Securing this special grant provides a crucial foundation for actively promoting the restoration and maintenance of Hyochang Park, which is both a nationally designated cultural heritage site and a sacred place of the independence movement. We will do our utmost to cultivate Hyochang Park as a space where history and culture are alive and to fully convey its meaning and value to future generations."
