Taihan Cable has been recognized as a leading company in stabilizing the submarine cable supply chain.
On December 1, Taihan Cable announced that it has been selected as the first company in the cable industry to be designated in the "submarine cable" sector as a "2025 Second Half Supply Chain Stabilization Leading Company," a program promoted by the South Korean government. The designation period is a basic three years from the date of selection, with a possible extension of up to five years.
The Supply Chain Stabilization Leading Company program selects companies that take the lead in stabilizing supply chains to proactively respond to global supply chain risks and to secure the independence and competitiveness of domestic industries. Selected companies receive various forms of support, including financial and fiscal assistance.
Taihan Cable cited its comprehensive investments to secure submarine cable production and installation capabilities, as well as its role in stabilizing the supply chain for the domestic offshore wind power industry, as key reasons for its selection.
Submarine cables are an essential component of offshore wind power, which is at the core of the energy transition. If supply is not stable, it can hinder not only the timely execution of individual projects but also the overall growth of the renewable energy industry.
According to the 11th Basic Plan for Electricity Supply and Demand, the domestic offshore wind power market is expected to grow rapidly to approximately 14GW (gigawatts) by 2030. As such, Taihan Cable's aggressive investments and technological advancements are being evaluated as key solutions to address the shortage of submarine cable supply.
In fact, anticipating increased demand and potential supply shortages, Taihan Cable declared the full-scale launch of its submarine cable business in 2020. The company has since strengthened its turnkey competitiveness by investing in the construction of a dedicated submarine cable plant, securing PALOS, the only domestic offshore wind CLV (Customer Lifetime Value), and acquiring a specialized installation company. As a result, Taihan Cable has won major domestic projects such as the Yeonggwang Nakwol Offshore Wind Power and Anma Offshore Wind Power projects, supplying submarine cables to these initiatives.
Additionally, Taihan Cable is constructing Submarine Cable Plant No. 2, capable of producing 640kV high-voltage direct current (HVDC) submarine cables, and is reviewing the acquisition of an HVDC cable-laying vessel. These efforts are part of its preparations to participate in the national "West Coast Energy Expressway" project, a key government initiative.
A Taihan Cable official stated, "This selection confirms that Taihan Cable plays a crucial role in building a stable value chain for domestic offshore wind power. We will continue to invest in facilities and enhance our technological competitiveness to strengthen the submarine cable supply chain and contribute to the sustainable development of the national energy industry."
