Kyung Hee University Selected for Ministry of Science and ICT's "Quantum Platform?Joint Quantum Lab" Project
Participation in National Project for Next-Generation Quantum Research
The research team led by Professor Sukkyun Son in the Department of Physics at Kyung Hee University announced on November 30 that it has been selected for the new 2025 “Quantum Platform-Joint Quantum Lab (JQL)” project, organized by the Ministry of Science and ICT and the National Research Foundation of Korea.
Through this project, the team will develop “Quantum Point Contact (QPC)-based high-precision quantum signal detection and quantum sensing technology.”
A total of five research labs nationwide were selected for this initiative, and Professor Son’s team was chosen as the leading lab in the fields of quantum signal detection and quantum sensing.
This program is a national joint research quantum technology project, with Kyung Hee University as the lead institution, jointly utilizing the national quantum technology infrastructure and measurement platform owned by the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST).
Quantum sensing technology is a next-generation core field of measurement that can precisely detect minute changes in physical quantities such as magnetic fields, electric fields, and photons. Existing superconducting-based detectors have only operated stably in extremely low-temperature environments (below 1K).
Professor Son’s team plans to realize a non-superconducting quantum sensor using a QPC-based semiconductor structure, enabling stable and precise signal detection even at higher temperatures.
The joint research will also include the Eminent Scholar (ES) research team of Konstantin Novoselov at Kyung Hee University. Novoselov is a leading researcher in the growth and application of quantum materials based on two-dimensional materials.
In addition, Professor Son’s team will collaborate with KIST to jointly utilize ultra-low temperature quantum measurement infrastructure, and will promote the operation of an open lab and a researcher exchange program between Kyung Hee University and the National University of Singapore.
