Hanwha Aerospace Signs 705.4 Billion Won Contract for Long-Range Surface-to-Air Missile System
ABM and Launchers to Be Supplied to DAPA by 2030
Hanwha Systems Signs 357.3 Billion Won MFR Contract
Core Technologies Include DACS and Dual-Pulse Propulsion System
Hanwha Aerospace announced on November 28 that it has signed a mass production contract worth 705.4 billion won with the Defense Acquisition Program Administration for the Long-Range Surface-to-Air Missile (L-SAM) system. Hanwha Aerospace plans to supply the military with anti-ballistic missiles (ABM) and launchers by 2030.

View original imageOnce the L-SAM is deployed, the Republic of Korea Armed Forces will complete a Korean-style missile defense system, with L-SAM providing upper-tier defense alongside Cheongung II and Patriot, which are responsible for lower-tier ballistic missile defense. The ABM features a Divert and Control System (DACS) that enables precise hit-to-kill interception of ballistic missiles at high altitudes (above 40 kilometers), where the air is too thin for aerodynamic control. Additionally, a dual-pulse propulsion system has been applied domestically for the first time. Only a handful of countries worldwide possess these two technologies.
Previously, Hanwha Systems signed a 357.3 billion won mass production contract with the Defense Acquisition Program Administration last month for the L-SAM Multi-Function Radar (MFR). The MFR, which serves as the "eyes" and core sensor of the L-SAM, is responsible for detecting and tracking incoming ballistic missiles and enemy aircraft from long distances. It can detect and track multiple targets and simultaneously perform friend-or-foe identification for aircraft.
After completing the L-SAM system development last year, the Agency for Defense Development, together with Hanwha Aerospace and Hanwha Systems, has been developing the High-Altitude Interceptor Missile (L-SAM-II) system, which will expand the anti-air and air defense coverage area by three to four times compared to the current system.
