Jongno-gu Marks Inaugural Year of Gwanghwamun Square Completion Next Year
Full-Scale Operation of Media Platform to Begin
In June next year, a dynamic Red Devils cheering event is expected to take place at Gwanghwamun Square. The coming year marks the inaugural year of the full-scale operation of the “Gwanghwamun Square” media platform, and Jongno-gu (District Mayor Jeong Moonheun) plans to host a variety of cultural events and implement a media art gallery.

According to Jongno-gu on the 26th, the district reviewed this year’s project achievements and finalized next year’s business plan during a recent regular meeting of the “Gwanghwamun Square Outdoor Advertising Free Display Zone Public-Private Joint Council.” Gwanghwamun Square is a second-phase free display zone project designated by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, and since last year, it has been underway across approximately 220,000 square meters around Gwanghwamun Square and Sejong-daero, with plans running through 2033.
This year, electronic billboards were installed at four locations, including the Koreana Hotel, KT WEST, and The Dong-A Ilbo, and the “K Festa-Gwanghwamun Square Opening Ceremony” held last September demonstrated the brand’s potential. Next year, additional billboards will be installed on nine more buildings, including Dajeong Building, Gukho Building, and Kyobo Building, to complete the media infrastructure and establish an integrated management system.
Jongno-gu intends to develop Gwanghwamun Square into an urban media art gallery that attracts a global audience by organizing a variety of events, such as lectures and media tours showcasing Korean culture and content, as well as the Red Devils cheering event scheduled for June next year.
Meanwhile, the FIFA World Cup will be held from June 13 to July 14 next year in three North and Central American countries, including the United States.
