Competition for National Symbolic District Urban Design Accelerates
Public Voting, Two Rounds of Expert Evaluation, and Winner Announcement
The submission period for the international competition for the National Symbolic District Master Plan (Urban Design) closed on November 20, with a total of 13 entries submitted.
According to the Multifunctional Administrative City Construction Agency on November 21, the competition was held to derive creative and outstanding urban design proposals for the National Symbolic District, which will house the National Assembly Sejong Building, the Presidential Sejong Office, and public spaces. The goal is for the district to symbolize the dignity of the Republic of Korea and embody the nation’s future values.
Following the announcement on September 2 this year, there was a preparation period of about 80 days. Thirteen teams, composed of leading domestic and international urban and architectural design firms, participated. As a result, a fierce competition is expected, with a variety of high-quality ideas reflecting the identity and future vision of the National Symbolic District being proposed.
With the submission of entries, the formation of the judging panel has also been completed. A representative from the Multifunctional Administrative City Construction Agency stated that, for fair and professional evaluation, a panel of seven judges consisting of top experts in urban planning, architecture, landscaping, and culture and the arts has been established. The list of judges has been released through the official international competition website.
The judging panel will comprehensively evaluate the submitted works based on creativity, appropriateness of spatial composition, and feasibility. Before the main evaluation, a public participation vote will be held from November 22 to 28, and the results will be combined with the first round of judging on December 1 to select the top five entries. For the public vote, participants will submit renderings of the Presidential Sejong Office and public spaces, and citizens can vote for their three preferred works. The second round of judging will take place on December 10, with the final winner to be confirmed, and the ultimate results will be announced on December 12.
Any adult citizen of the Republic of Korea can participate in the public vote through the official international competition website, the official Multifunctional Administrative City Construction Agency website, the agency’s official social media channels (YouTube, Instagram, Naver Blog), or via QR code.
