Launched in 2008, the Garak Kimchi Festival marks its 18th year in 2025 and has been held every year without interruption. Distributors at Garak Market and the corporation jointly raise the budget, and citizens, children, and foreign volunteers participate in making kimchi, which is then delivered to 10,000 households in Seoul.
The corporation explained that this event has gone beyond simple sharing and has played a role in spreading the value of social contribution among companies and organizations. Even during the period when gatherings of more than five people were prohibited due to COVID-19 (2020-2022), the festival continued its donations by producing and distributing 10,000 boxes of finished kimchi through HACCP-certified companies.
The event is organized by the Hope Sharing Market, a nonprofit corporation established in 2010 to integrate Garak Market’s social contribution activities. It originated from the “Garak Market Hope Sharing Volunteer Group,” launched in 2008 to unify various social contribution projects that had been conducted by business sector since the market opened on June 19, 1985.
