7 Out of 10 Schools in Gwangju Have a Sex Offender Living Within 1km Radius
"Risk Analysis by School and Enhanced Security on School Routes Needed"
In the Gwangju area, 7 out of 10 kindergartens and schools have a convicted sex offender living within a 1-kilometer radius.
On November 4, Jeong Muchang, a Gwangju City Council Member (Democratic Party of Korea, Gwangsan District 2), stated during the administrative audit of the Gwangju Metropolitan Office of Education, "Out of 571 schools in Gwangju, 402 schools (70%) are located within areas where sex offenders reside within a 1-kilometer radius."
By school type, 182 out of 253 kindergartens (71.9%), 111 out of 155 elementary schools (71.6%), 66 out of 92 middle schools (71.7%), and 43 out of 71 high schools (60.6%) are included in these areas.
Jeong pointed out the need to implement practical safety measures, such as expanding security facilities along school routes, installing more closed-circuit (CC) TVs, and strengthening patrols, especially around schools located in areas with a high concentration of sex offenders. He added, "It is necessary to establish a risk analysis and data-based management system for each school to better protect students."

He also emphasized, "According to data from the National Police Agency as of September, there are 3,387 registered sex offenders in Gwangju, 10 of whom are currently unaccounted for. The Office of Education must cooperate with the police, local governments, and other relevant agencies to prevent secondary crimes and ensure safety around schools."
