Boryeong City, Recognized as an "Age-Friendly City," Officially Joins WHO Global Network for Age-friendly Cities and Communities
Recognized for Achievements in Eight Key Areas, Including Welfare Policies, Transportation, Health, and Housing for Seniors
Global Certification Earned Through Generationally Integrated Welfare and Citizen-Driven Urban Policies
Boryeong City in South Chungcheong Province has been officially recognized as an "age-friendly city" on the international stage by joining the Global Network for Age-friendly Cities and Communities, operated by the World Health Organization (WHO). By becoming part of this global alliance, which includes over 1,700 cities across 57 countries, Boryeong is being praised for the success of its generationally integrated welfare policies and citizen-centered age-friendly initiatives.
Boryeong City announced on November 3 that it has joined the WHO Global Network for Age-friendly Cities and Communities, having been recognized for its age-friendly policies.
The WHO Global Network for Age-friendly Cities and Communities is an international cooperative organization where local governments worldwide share policies and experiences to address rapid population aging and improve the quality of life for older adults. Currently, 1,739 cities in 57 countries are participating in this network.
Since 2024, the city has conducted foundational research and resident surveys to create an age-friendly city. It has systematically implemented action plans across eight key areas presented by the WHO: outdoor environments and facilities, transportation convenience, housing stability, leisure and social activities, respect and social integration, social participation and employment, communication and information, and health and community care.
In particular, Boryeong is leading the way in realizing "a city where all generations are happy" through various initiatives, including expanding job opportunities for seniors, strengthening health management services for the elderly, improving transportation convenience for those with mobility challenges, and promoting intergenerational exchange programs.
With its recent inclusion in the WHO network, the city plans to further strengthen cooperation with the international community and advance as a sustainable welfare city through the implementation of the Boryeong-style age-friendly city action plan.
