Andong Gosan-jeong Area Built by Yi Hwang's Disciple Designated as Scenic Site
A Pavilion Beneath Nakdong River Cliffs, Offering Unique Scenery Each Season
Harmony of Scholar Culture and Natural Landscape
Filming Location for "The Tyrant's Chef"
The 'Andong Gosan-jeong Area,' imbued with beautiful natural scenery and the spirit of Confucian scholar culture, will now be managed as a Scenic Site.
The Cultural Heritage Administration announced on the 27th that it has designated this area, located at 447 Gasong-ri, Dosan-myeon, Andong-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do, as a Scenic Site.
Andong Gosan-jeong is a representative site of Korean Confucian scholar culture. It is where Toegye Yi Hwang (1501-1570), a Confucian scholar of the Joseon Dynasty, and Geum Nansu (1530-1604), his disciple and a militia leader during the Japanese invasions of Korea, shared scholarly pursuits and artistic enjoyment.
Geum Nansu built Gosan-jeong in the 19th year of King Myeongjong's reign (1564). The construction process and the surrounding landscape at that time are recorded in various documents, including 'Gosanje-yeong.' Poems and writings by Toegye and other literary figures remain, offering a glimpse into the interactions and views on nature held by Joseon intellectuals.
The pavilion is situated beneath a cliff along the Gasong Gorge, a canyon adjacent to the Yedon-gil path traversed by Yi Hwang and the Nongam Jongtaek, the head house of the Nongam family. Blending with the river, rocks, and forest, it presents a different landscape in each of the four seasons. Recently, it has attracted attention as a filming location for dramas such as 'Mr. Sunshine' and 'The Tyrant's Chef.'
