The Gangwon Special Self-Governing Provincial Office of Education (Superintendent Shin Kyungho) announced on the 24th that the Gangwon team participating in the under-18 competition (high school division) at the 106th National Sports Festival, held throughout Busan Metropolitan City from October 17 to October 23, won a total of 110 medals, including 32 gold, 36 silver, and 42 bronze medals.

View original imageThis achievement marks an increase of 10 medals compared to the previous year and ranks fourth in the high school division among the 17 cities and provinces. As a result, Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province placed sixth overall in the final standings.
Key performers included: Sim Doeun (Gangwon Physical Education High School) in weightlifting; Hong Harang (Yangyang High School) and Hong Yunhwa (Yangyang High School), who both became triple gold medalists in cycling; Han Gyeol (Gangwon Physical Education High School) in athletics; Choi Cheoljune (Gangwon Physical Education High School) in archery; and Park Jun (Gangwon Arts High School) and Park Habi (Gangwon Arts High School), who each claimed two gold medals in dancesport.
In particular, Gangwon Physical Education High School played a central role in the Gangwon Provincial Office of Education team, winning a total of 47 medals-16 gold, 12 silver, and 19 bronze-accounting for 43% of the overall medal count. Additionally, the Yangyang High School cycling team set a record for the most medals by a single school in a single sport within the province, winning 14 medals in total (5 gold, 7 silver, and 2 bronze).
In tennis, Yanggu High School achieved an unprecedented sixth consecutive national championship in the boys’ division, while the girls’ team (comprising students from Bongui High School and Wonju Girls’ High School) won their second consecutive title. With both boys’ and girls’ teams securing back-to-back championships for two years in a row, Gangwon clinched the overall high school division tennis title. This marks the first time the Gangwon tennis team has achieved consecutive double victories in both boys’ and girls’ divisions since participating in the National Sports Festival.
Furthermore, the soft tennis team from Samcheok Dogae Computer Information High School, which has only 17 students, achieved a “miracle of a small school” by winning the girls’ team gold medal, the individual singles silver medal, and the individual doubles bronze medal.
