The signing ceremony was attended by nine people, including Seongnam Mayor Shin Sangjin, Han Younghyun, President of the Seongnam Moran Rotary Club, Rotary International District 3600, and Lee Seungwoo, Chairman of the Korean War Veterans Memorial Construction Committee in Aurora, USA.
The main points of the agreement include: △ honoring Korean War veterans and preserving historical value △ promoting various programs through international exchange △ expanding fundraising activities and citizen participation for the construction of the memorial △ providing administrative support and cooperating in exchange events.
This agreement was prompted by Seongnam City learning about the local Korean community's efforts to build a Korean War Veterans Memorial during its visit to Aurora, USA, in January of last year.
Over the past year and eight months, the city has continuously collaborated by collecting 19.4 million won in donations through organizations such as the Korean War Veterans Association and delivering the funds to the Aurora Korean War Veterans Memorial Construction Committee in September.
The Aurora Korean War Veterans Memorial is being built on a 3,000-square-meter site within Generals Park, located on the grounds of the University of Colorado Hospital, which was donated by the city of Aurora.
The groundbreaking ceremony was held on September 23, and the total project cost for constructing the memorial and the accompanying memorial hall is expected to be approximately 1.3 billion won (950,000 dollars).
Inside the memorial hall, there will be △ 16 storyboards explaining the Korean War △ 22 monuments honoring the sacrifices of soldiers from the 22 United Nations countries that participated in the Korean War △ and four traditional Korean gardens.
