Shinsegae Department Store Autumn Special Exhibition "Weaving of Rice"
Highlighting Korean Life and Culture Through "Rice" and "Straw"
Featuring Straw Crafts, Rice-Based Foods, and Hands-On Experiences
Shinsegae Department Store will hold a special autumn exhibition titled "Weaving of Rice" at "House of Shinsegae Heritage" on the 5th floor of its main branch until November 30.
House of Shinsegae Heritage has selected "rice," a crop that represents the autumn season, as the theme for this exhibition. "Weaving of Rice" aims to showcase the various aspects of rice, which has long supported the food, clothing, and shelter of Koreans as both the most important staple food (rice) and the most familiar material in daily life (straw). The exhibition seeks to highlight Korea’s diverse and abundant culture that has developed alongside rice.
The exhibition begins by enhancing understanding and familiarity with "straw," which has been used throughout daily life from household goods to architecture. Participating artists, including the straw craft cooperative "Neurinson Cooperative," straw craft master Kim Junhwan, and artisan Hwang Junghwa, introduce the craftsmanship of straw weaving that has been passed down to the present day. At the same time, the exhibition presents contemporary woven crafts that expand and inherit this tradition by incorporating new materials and modern sensibilities.
The exhibition also sheds light on the various roles of "rice" as a staple food in forms such as cooked rice, rice cakes, and rice wine. The Shinsegae Department Store Korean Cuisine Research Institute presents rice-based foods that have been directly researched and developed. The grocery store "Fermentation: Storage" introduces a variety of rice products, including "Gwi," made from native rice varieties, as well as sparkling Makgeolli and Takju.
There will also be opportunities for visitors to participate, such as a lecture titled "Straw, Together with the Lives of Koreans" by Lee Jeonga, curator of the Straw and Grass Life Museum, and a "Traditional Straw Craft Experience."
