Gyeonggi Youth Climate Envoy to Return from Cambodia by the 21st
All 34 members of the Gyeonggi Youth Climate Envoy dispatched to Cambodia will return to Korea by October 21.
According to the Gyeonggi Provincial Government on October 19, 17 members who had been dispatched to the Kampong Speu region of Cambodia returned on the mornings of October 17 and 19. On the night of October 19, 10 members who had been sent to the Siem Reap region will return, followed by 7 more members from the same region on the night of October 20. As a result, all members of the envoy will return by October 21.
The envoy had originally planned to send 17 members each to Kampong Speu and Siem Reap on October 11, with volunteer activities such as tree planting, environmental improvement, environmental awareness campaigns, and cultural exchanges scheduled to continue until October 28.
However, due to a recent series of crimes targeting Koreans in Cambodia, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs raised the travel advisory for certain areas. In response, Gyeonggi Governor Kim Dongyeon decided on October 15 to recall the Gyeonggi Youth Climate Envoy early, resulting in the repatriation of the team.
Governor Kim Dongyeon emphasized that, although the activity period in Cambodia, originally planned for 18 days, had to be shortened out of necessity, there should be no disadvantages for the envoy members. He also instructed the Department of International Cooperation to prepare additional programs.
