Key figures from South Korea's political and business sectors, including Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong, attended the 'Trilateral Economic Dialogue (TED)' among South Korea, the United States, and Japan to discuss mutual economic development and responses to complex crises.
According to the business community and other sources on October 15, more than 100 prominent figures from the governments, legislatures, and corporations of South Korea, the United States, and Japan participated in the event held at the Keidanren Hall in Tokyo, Japan. From South Korea, attendees included Chairman Lee Jae-yong, Hyundai Motor Group Chairman Chung Euisun, and Hyosung Group Chairman Cho Hyun-joon. From Japan, representatives from business organizations such as Keidanren, Toyota Motor Corporation, Sony Group, and NEC were present.
Following a dinner event in Tokyo the previous day, participants engaged in sector-specific discussions on this day. They are expected to address a wide range of economic issues, including the tariff policies of the Donald Trump administration, the U.S.-China trade conflict, and supply chain development.
Hyundai Motor Group Vice Chairman Jang Jae-hoon told reporters, "Last year, we discussed issues like cooperation with China and among South Korea, the U.S., and Japan, but this time it seems we are covering many topics such as technology, communications, and energy."
Regarding the possibility of tariff issues being discussed, he added, "The situations for South Korea and Japan are somewhat different," and expressed hope that signs of resolution would emerge before the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit to be held in Gyeongju on October 31.
TED is a policy seminar where key leaders from the political and business sectors of South Korea, the United States, and Japan gather to identify opportunities for democracy and shared prosperity, and to discuss ways to expand comprehensive mutual benefits. The event is sponsored by Hyundai Motor Group. Having started in San Francisco, California, in 2023, this year marks its third edition. The 2025 event is co-hosted by five internationally renowned think tanks: the Woodrow Wilson Center, the Hudson Institute, the 21st Century Policy Institute, the Indo-Pacific Forum, and the East Asia Foundation.
