Gwangju to Raise Taxi Fares from the 22nd... Standard Base Fare Set at 4,800 Won
Differentiated Late-Night and Out-of-Boundary Surcharges
Reflecting Input from Public Hearings, Policy Committee, and City Council
"Reducing Citizen Burden and Improving Service Quality"
On October 13, Gwangju City announced that it will raise taxi fares starting at midnight on the 22nd, taking into account rising transportation costs, fare levels in neighboring cities and provinces, and the overall business environment of the industry.
This fare increase reflects the 13.35% rate approved and recommended by the Price Countermeasures Committee on September 29. The measure aims to ease the financial difficulties of the taxi industry and provide citizens with stable, high-quality transportation services.
The city explained that it carefully developed the fare increase plan through a process of gathering public input, including public hearings, the Taxi Policy Committee, and feedback from the city council. The goal was to minimize the burden on citizens while addressing the challenges faced by the industry.
With this adjustment, the base fare for standard taxis will change from 4,300 won for the first 2 kilometers to 4,800 won for the first 1.7 kilometers. The distance fare will be adjusted from 100 won per 134 meters to 100 won per 132 meters, while the time fare will remain at 100 won per 32 seconds.
The late-night surcharge, which was previously a flat 20% from midnight to 4 a.m., will now be more detailed: 20% from 11 p.m. to midnight, 30% from midnight to 2 a.m., and 20% from 2 a.m. to 4 a.m. Additionally, the out-of-boundary surcharge will remain at 35%, but will be raised to 40% when traveling to nearby cities and counties such as Naju and Damyang.
For deluxe and large taxis, the base fare will increase from 5,100 won for the first 2 kilometers to 5,400 won for the first 1.7 kilometers. The distance fare will be adjusted from 200 won per 156 meters to 200 won per 149 meters. A new late-night surcharge of 20% (from 11 p.m. to 4 a.m.) and an out-of-boundary surcharge of 20% will also be introduced.
The city plans to focus on improving service quality in ways that citizens can feel, in line with the taxi fare increase. Gwangju City and the taxi industry will work to enhance service quality through courtesy, cleanliness, and safety campaigns, strengthened service training, and inspections for illegal activities, so that citizens can experience tangible improvements.
