Acting Police Chief Yoo: "Cooperation with Cambodia Not Smooth... Korean Desk Unlikely in Short Term"
On October 13, Yoo Jaesung, the acting Commissioner General of the Korean National Police Agency, commented on the establishment of a Korean Desk in Cambodia, stating, "We have experience setting one up in the Philippines, but it takes a considerable amount of time." He added, "There needs to be a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the local authorities and police, so it is difficult to achieve this in a short period."
During a regular press briefing that day, Acting Commissioner Yoo said, "It is true that, compared to other Southeast Asian countries, cooperation between police forces in Cambodia is not as smooth," and added, "We are continuing our efforts in coordination with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and relevant authorities."
He further explained, "We are putting pressure on Cambodia through organizations such as Interpol and ASEANAPOL, and we will make requests for cooperation during the International Association of Chiefs of Police conference." He also noted, "If there is no willingness on Cambodia's part, it will be difficult for us to find effective solutions."
Previously, the Korean National Police Agency announced that during the upcoming bilateral meeting with Cambodia on October 23, they plan to address countermeasures for crimes targeting Koreans as an agenda item, and discuss the establishment of a Korean Desk and the dispatch of police officers.
