National Resources Fire, 30,000 Rounds of Ammunition Leaked... President Lee: "Evidence of Collapsed Fundamental Systems"
"Need to Reexamine Discipline Across South Korea's Public Service"
"Insensitivity to the Possibility of Accidents Is a Serious Problem and a Deep-Rooted Evil"
President Lee Jaemyung emphasized the need to reexamine the discipline within South Korea's public service, citing the recent fire at the National Information Resources Service and the leakage of live ammunition intended for shooting athletes.
According to a briefing by Presidential Spokesperson Kang Yujeong, President Lee referred to these incidents during a meeting with senior secretaries and aides on October 2, stating, "These are clear signs that the fundamental systems of the Republic of Korea have significantly deteriorated."
The Northern Gyeonggi Provincial Police Agency's Criminal Investigation Unit arrested a shooting coach affiliated with the local sports council on October 1, on charges of diverting approximately 30,000 rounds of live ammunition intended for athletes. In response, President Lee remarked, "Being insensitive to the possibility of such accidents is a serious problem and a deep-rooted evil," adding, "The real issue lies in the lack of awareness about potential risks, which means we need a shift in perspective and mindset."

President Lee also compared the issue of discipline in the public sector to cleaning. According to Spokesperson Kang, President Lee said, "Even when an area becomes dirty, people who pass by it every day may not notice and therefore neglect to clean it," stressing the need for a change in perspective.
