View original imageThe purpose of this event is to bring together families of rural exchange students who have come to study in Pyeongchang in 2025, to help them better understand the Pyeongchang area, to provide a forum for direct communication between the superintendent and the exchange student families, and to facilitate interaction among the families themselves, thereby supporting their successful adaptation to the region.
Recently, the number of students coming to study in Pyeongchang has more than doubled, starting with three new rural exchange students in the first semester of 2025 (one at an elementary school and two at middle schools), and increasing to seven new rural exchange students in the second semester (two at elementary schools and two at middle schools). As of the second semester, a total of eight exchange students from five families-including one student who extended their rural exchange from the first semester-have transferred to two elementary schools (Gyechon Elementary School and Jujin Elementary School) and two middle schools (Gyechon Middle School and Mitan Middle School) within the district.
This achievement is the result of several factors: diverse program support from the Pyeongchang Office of Education; operation and promotion of specialized curricula at small schools; and various educational activities conducted in cooperation with the local community, including ecological environment experiences and cultural arts programs that are difficult to experience in urban settings.

Superintendent Kim Geumsuk stated, "Rural exchange is more than simply sending urban students to rural areas; it is a process of creating an educational ecosystem where both the region and the city can thrive together. Through this dialogue with rural exchange student families, we aim to help them adapt well to the Pyeongchang area, support the specialized programs of small schools in the district, and, by working with the local community, promote rural exchange programs that will ensure the sustainability of local education and bring new vitality to Pyeongchang." She also expressed hope that these efforts will suggest a new direction for Pyeongchang, a region facing population decline, and that future developments will be promising.
