US Ambassador to China: "US-China Summit Will Definitely Take Place Next Year"
As speculation grows that a meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping is likely to take place on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in South Korea, David Perdue, the U.S. Ambassador to China, stated on the 23rd that there is a strong possibility the U.S.-China summit will be held next year.
According to CNBC, Ambassador Perdue made these remarks during a press conference with a U.S. House delegation visiting Beijing, China, saying, "As President Trump has said, he is looking forward to the meeting. While it could happen in the near future, it will definitely take place next year."
On the 19th, President Trump announced via social media that after a phone call with President Xi, the two leaders had agreed to meet around the time of the APEC summit. He also said that early next year, he would visit China, followed by President Xi visiting the United States.
Ambassador Perdue reported that the U.S. House delegation discussed the possibility of a phone call and summit between the U.S. and Chinese presidents during their meeting with Vice Premier He Lifeng that day. He added, "The relationship between President Xi and President Trump is currently very good and can be described as encouraging."
Meanwhile, according to Bloomberg News, Ambassador Perdue stated that China is in the final stages of negotiating a large-scale Boeing aircraft order. He said, "The negotiations are now in the last few days or weeks, and we hope for a positive outcome."
