Police Refer Woman in Her 70s Who Assaulted Assemblyman Sung Iljong to Prosecution Without Detention
A woman in her 70s who assaulted Assemblyman Sung Iljong of the People Power Party has been referred to the prosecution.
On September 22, the Yeongdeungpo Police Station in Seoul announced that on September 16, they had forwarded Ms. A, a woman in her 70s, to the prosecution without detention on charges of violating the Act on Punishment of Violent Acts.
Although Assemblyman Sung's side informed the police that they did not wish to pursue punishment, the police decided to refer Ms. A after conducting a comprehensive investigation into her actions and criminal history.
Previously, Assemblyman Sung's side had submitted a statement to the police, requesting leniency on the grounds that the perpetrator was found to have difficulty making normal judgments and asking that she be allowed to receive treatment.
Ms. A is accused of slapping Assemblyman Sung, who was attending an event at the National Assembly Members' Office Building in Yeouido, Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul, at approximately 1:48 p.m. on September 10.
