Seongdong-gu Begins Pedestrian Environment Improvements at Seongsu Station Exit 2 Amid Safety Concerns
Safety Measures Implemented Due to Delays in Opening New Exit at Seongsu Station
Jung Wono: "The Risk of Safety Incidents Is Extremely Concerning"
Seongdong-gu in Seoul (headed by District Mayor Jung Wono) will begin full-scale improvement works to enhance the pedestrian environment at Exit 2 of Seongsu Station, including relocating the crosswalk and installing new traffic lights. This initiative is part of a series of pedestrian environment improvements promoted by Seongdong-gu, following last year’s emergence of congestion and safety risks at Exit 3 of Seongsu Station as a social issue.
The area around Seongsu Station is home to numerous knowledge industry centers and large corporations, resulting in a daily passenger volume of up to 100,000 people. Concerns about safety incidents due to the surge in pedestrian traffic at Exit 2 have been continuously raised. Since last year, Seongdong-gu has conducted technical reviews and practical discussions, and this year, secured the project foundation by passing the Traffic Safety Deliberation Committee in March, the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency review in April, and collaborating with the Seoul Metropolitan Government to secure a project budget and a special grant of 200 million won from the Ministry of the Interior and Safety.
The main improvements include relocating the existing raised crosswalk, installing new traffic lights for vehicles and pedestrians, adding pedestrian guardrails and colored guidance blocks, and upgrading traffic signs and road markings. In addition, various risk factors for pedestrian safety will be removed, such as relocating nearby kiosks and flower beds and removing street trees.
The construction is scheduled to begin in October and be completed by November, and is expected to prevent crowding in front of Exit 2 of Seongsu Station and significantly enhance pedestrian safety.
