"Speed Is Key in Housing Supply" Vice Minister of Land Urges Local Governments and Public Agencies
On September 17, First Vice Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Lee Sangkyung held a supply review meeting with key organizations responsible for public housing supply.
The meeting was attended by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, as well as metropolitan governments in the Seoul metropolitan area, including the Seoul Metropolitan Government, Gyeonggi Province, and Incheon Metropolitan City. Relevant public corporations such as Korea Land and Housing Corporation, Seoul Housing and Communities Corporation, Gyeonggi Housing and Urban Development Corporation, and Incheon Urban Development Corporation also participated. Since last year, the Ministry has been holding regular review meetings to monitor the implementation status of public housing supply plans.
At the meeting, participants discussed ways to cooperate among institutions to implement the government’s recently announced housing supply expansion measures on September 7. The meeting also covered performance in public housing supply plans for the first half of this year and plans for the second half. Vice Minister Lee stated, “The role and responsibility of the public sector, which is at the core of housing supply, are significant. Achieving the target of starting construction on 1.35 million homes in the Seoul metropolitan area will have a major impact on the public, but the effort required to achieve this goal is several times greater.”
He went on to encourage the agencies, saying, “Each organization must approach this with an extraordinary sense of urgency to ensure that we keep the promises made to the public.” Regarding this year’s public housing supply plan, he added, “We must carry out the planned targets without wavering. In particular, the fact that the number of housing starts and permits in the first half of this year exceeded the target of 10,000 units is a meaningful achievement.”

Vice Minister Lee also emphasized, “Housing supply is a challenge that cannot be accomplished by the government alone. Under the shared goal of ‘promptly supplying sufficient housing,’ the government, local governments, public corporations, and the industry must unite as one team and pool their capabilities.”
