National Institute for Korean Medicine Development Begins Full-Scale Operation as KOLAS Accredited Testing Institution
Provision of Internationally Accredited Testing Services
for Quality Control of Herbal Medicines
The National Institute for Korean Medicine Development has begun providing internationally recognized KOLAS accredited testing services in earnest since September to ensure the quality control of herbal medicines at Korean medicine institutions.
The Quality Certification Center of the National Institute for Korean Medicine Development was accredited as an official testing institution in December 2023 by the Korea Laboratory Accreditation Scheme (KOLAS) under the Korean Agency for Technology and Standards, Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy. The accreditation covers a total of 17 testing items, including 11 items in chemical testing (pharmaceuticals) and 6 items in biological testing (microbiology).
The Korea Laboratory Accreditation Scheme is an organization that evaluates and accredits institutions in the fields of testing, calibration, inspection, proficiency testing, reference material production, medical testing, biological resource banking, and product certification, based on the National Standards Act and international standards set by relevant organizations.
The scope of accreditation and the list of testing items can be found on the KOLAS website or the National Institute for Korean Medicine Development website.
Furthermore, in March 2024, the institute was approved to use the ILAC-MRA combined mark from the International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation, granting international equivalence to test reports issued by the National Institute for Korean Medicine Development.
In particular, the institute has further enhanced the expertise and reliability of its quality control by utilizing the latest equipment and techniques, such as LC-MSMS, real-time PCR testing methods, and dry film methods.
Song Sujin, Acting President of the National Institute for Korean Medicine Development, stated, "Through the full-scale operation as a KOLAS accredited testing institution, we will further strengthen our quality control system to meet international standards so that the public can use herbal medicines with confidence," adding, "We will continue to prioritize public safety and trust as our top mission."
Korean medicine institutions wishing to use these services can apply through the business information (public services) section on the National Institute for Korean Medicine Development website. Detailed information on testing procedures and fees is also available on the website.
