More than 70 participants, including artists, academics, and administrative experts, gathered to discuss the social significance and sustainability of public art within urban environments. Sehwa Art Museum houses "Hammering Man" (2002), a leading public art piece in Korea, and pursues the vision of being an "open museum in the city." Through the forum, the museum presented the social role and future potential of network-based public art that connects art, the city, and its citizens.
Professor Shim Sangyong of Seoul National University (Director of the Museum) opened the event with welcoming remarks. Jang Seokjun, General Director of the Cheonggyecheon Public Art Project (CEO of Public Question), delivered the keynote speech titled "How Does a City Become Art: The Relational Transformation of Public Art," introducing the possibilities for coexistence between cities and art. Art historian Lee Isun, in a presentation on "Paradigm Shifts in Korean Public Art," addressed the trend of commemorative monuments evolving into participatory art forms and provided a critical analysis of changes in Korean public art.
Choi Inkyu, Director of Design Policy at Seoul Metropolitan Government, presented "Public Art in Seoul: The City Imagined by Public Art," introducing the "Seoul-Style Public Art Project" and policy implementation models. Hyun Siwon, Assistant Professor at Yonsei University Graduate School of Communication, gave a presentation titled "Beyond the White Cube: Sculpture Coexisting with Human Life and the City." Professor Hyun previously shared experiments on temporality, mobility, and horizontality in public art through the example of the Changwon Sculpture Biennale last year.
