Pukyong National University Hosts Shipbuilding and Marine Mobility Cooperation Forum in the Philippines
Supporting Yongdang Campus-Based Companies in Expanding into Global Markets
Pukyong National University (President Bae Sanghoon) held the "Korea-Philippines Shipbuilding and Marine Mobility Cooperation Forum" in Cebu, Philippines, on September 9, in collaboration with Busan Nam-gu District Office and the Shipbuilding & Offshore Plant Engineering Cooperative (KOSEC).
This forum, held for the third time following previous events in Manila in 2019 and 2022, was organized to explore joint development opportunities in the shipbuilding and marine industries between Korea and the Philippines, and to support the overseas market expansion of companies based at Pukyong National University's Yongdang Campus.
Through the Busan RISE (Regional Innovation-led University Support System) project, Pukyong National University is fostering a collaborative ecosystem among local governments, industries, academia, and research institutes, focusing on blue food technology and energy technology. The university operates various support programs through its Global Order Promotion Team to help Yongdang Campus-based companies pioneer new markets overseas, including in the Philippines, and organized this forum as part of those efforts.
The event was attended by Ha Myungshin, Vice President for External Affairs at Pukyong National University; Kim Chanjung, Head of the RISE Project Management Headquarters and Research Support Office; Oh Euntaek, Mayor of Busan Nam-gu; Lee Junghwan, Chairman of KOSEC; and representatives of campus-based companies from Korea. On the Philippine side, more than 120 participants attended, including officials from the Department of Transportation, the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA), the Mayor of Cebu, the Navy, and the Manila Maritime Shipyard Association (MMSAI).
The event featured the signing of an MOU between KOSEC and MARINA, as well as business consultations and networking sessions between Korean companies and local enterprises and institutions. Participating companies increased their chances of securing contracts by identifying concrete opportunities for collaboration through meetings with local shipyards and ship owners.
On the following day, September 10, Pukyong National University visited Cebu Technological University to sign a memorandum of understanding for cooperation and visited MARINA to discuss practical cooperation measures linked to the activities of campus-based companies. The achievements of this forum are expected to lead to the signing of letters of intent (LOIs) for shipbuilding projects by campus-based companies at the International Shipbuilding and Marine Industry Exhibition (KORMARINE 2025), which will be held at BEXCO in Busan this October.
