Special Prosecutor Raids Home and Office of Former People Power Party Floor Leader Chu Kyungho over Alleged Obstruction of Lifting Martial Law
Repeated Changes of Party Meeting Venue on Martial Law Day
Chu Kyungho's Side: "No Instructions from the Presidential Office, No Obstruction of the Vote"
The special prosecutor team led by Cho Eunseok, which is investigating allegations of rebellion and treason related to martial law, began a compulsory investigation on September 2 into former People Power Party floor leader Chu Kyungho regarding suspicions of obstructing the lifting of martial law.
According to legal sources, the special prosecutor's team began searching Chu's residence in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, on the morning of the same day. They are also in discussions with the National Assembly Secretariat to execute a search warrant for his parliamentary office.
The special prosecutor's team is investigating allegations that, on December 4 of last year, during the vote on the resolution to lift martial law, Chu and others repeatedly changed the location of the party's general assembly, thereby obstructing other lawmakers from participating in the vote. Only 18 out of 108 People Power Party lawmakers took part in the vote.
Previously, on August 21, the special prosecutor's team searched the National Assembly Secretariat and secured closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage related to the case. At that time, the search warrant listed Chu as a suspect. The team has also obtained records of phone calls made by Chu immediately after the declaration of martial law, including calls with former President Yoon Sukyeol, and is investigating these communications.
The special prosecutor's team plans to trace Chu's movements at the time, reconstruct the sequence of events, and clarify what occurred during the changes of location, movements, and external communications. They also intend to track Chu's activities through his staff.
Chu's side maintains that he was not aware of the martial law in advance and did not discuss obstructing the vote with former President Yoon.
