Naver Webtoon, Kakao Entertainment, and Others to Assign Video Ratings Directly
Three More Companies Designated as Self-Rating Operators by the Video Rating Board
The Video Rating Board announced on August 29 that it has newly designated Naver Webtoon, SJMNC, and Kakao Entertainment as "self-rating operators." Starting from September 1, these three companies will directly assign ratings to online videos uploaded to their respective platforms.
After accepting applications in June, the Video Rating Board made this decision following approximately two months of document review, preliminary screening, and final evaluation. Experts in management, law, media, and youth education participated in the process, reviewing application requirements, screening procedures, and post-management plans.
The self-rating system was introduced in March last year. As the distribution of online videos surged, some rating authority was delegated to private platforms. Currently, ten companies have been designated, including Netflix, Disney+, Wavve, and Tving.
The three newly designated companies each specialize in unique content. "Cuts" from Naver Webtoon features short-form animations based on webtoons; "MOA" from SJMNC focuses on Asian dramas and films; and "Berriz" from Kakao Entertainment offers drama and cultural content aimed at a global fandom.
