As the first university in the country to establish a dedicated AI college, Chonnam National University is establishing itself as an innovative educational model that produces tangible results connected to industry demand through this achievement.
According to Chonnam National University on August 21, nine students majoring in Intellectual Property Convergence at the College of AI Convergence received the Grand Prize and Excellence Award at the '2025 Intellectual Property Summer School,' hosted by the Korean Intellectual Property Office and organized by the Korea Invention Promotion Association.
The 'Intellectual Property Summer School' is the Korean Intellectual Property Office's flagship program that educates students from various majors on the importance and application of intellectual property rights.
This year's event, held under the theme '2025 Trend Korea,' took place from August 11 to 13 at the Bloomvista Hotel in Yangpyeong, Gyeonggi Province, with about 60 students participating from nine national hub universities operating intellectual property-focused university projects across the country.
At the event, the team including Kim Jiyong from Chonnam National University College of AI Convergence proposed a 'cosmetic testing device that implements color development using light' and was awarded the Grand Prize (Commissioner of the Korean Intellectual Property Office Award).
The team with Ryu Minseok received the Excellence Award (President of the Korea Invention Promotion Association Award) for their 'smart wearable collar exclusively for companion dogs and a customized service application based on health data,' while the team including Lim Kyubo and Choi Yoonjung was also awarded the Excellence Award for their 'device for shaping children's eating habits.'

Park Inho, head professor of the Intellectual Property Convergence major at Chonnam National University, stated, "I hope that through this summer school, students have gained not only theoretical knowledge but also practical experience, and that this will serve as a stepping stone for them to grow into intellectual property experts." He added, "We will continue to foster talent to lead the field of intellectual property through practical education and a variety of external activities."
