Orion Fresh Potato Snacks Surpass 4 Trillion Won in Global Cumulative Sales
Global Success for Orion's Fresh Potato Snacks
270 Bags Sold Every Minute
Strong Performance in Korea, Vietnam, and China
Orion announced on August 21 that the global cumulative sales of its fresh potato snacks have surpassed 4 trillion won.
Since the launch of Poca Chip in Korea in 1988, more than 5.1 billion units have been sold through the first half of this year. This equates to 270 bags sold every minute. Half of the cumulative sales were generated in Korea, while the other half came from Vietnam and China.
There are two types of fresh potato snacks: Poca Chip and Swing Chip. After its domestic launch, Poca Chip became the No. 1 fresh potato snack in Korea by market share in 1994, just six years later, and has maintained its top position for 31 years to date. In Vietnam and China, fresh potato snacks have been launched since 2006. In Vietnam, "Ostar (Poca Chip)" has held the No. 1 market share in the Vietnamese snack market from 2017 to the present. In China, "Haoyouqu (Swing Chip)" achieved record sales of over 160 billion won last year. In the first half of this year, sales grew by 10% compared to the previous year.
Due to this popularity, Orion uses more than 200,000 tons of potatoes annually for its fresh potato snacks. This year, the company expects to use 230,000 tons. Considering that Korea's total potato production last year was 544,000 tons, Orion's potato usage accounts for more than 40% of the domestic harvest. Orion procures potatoes locally by contracting with potato farms in Korea and Vietnam. In China, the company operates a directly managed farm in Inner Mongolia. During periods when potato cultivation is not possible, Korea imports potatoes from the United States and Australia, while Vietnam imports from China. The total area of potato farms contracted by Orion in Korea, Vietnam, and China reaches 3,508 hectares (35 square kilometers), which is equivalent to 12 times the size of Yeouido or about 4,900 soccer fields.
Orion continues to launch products tailored to local tastes, such as seaweed, kimchi, and gochujang flavors, maintaining its popularity among consumers in each country. As Western dietary habits become more widespread, more Korean consumers are eating fresh potato snacks as a meal replacement, leading Orion to expect continued growth in demand for these snacks.
