Gwangyang City, South Jeolla Province (Mayor Jung Inhwa), announced on the 11th that the award ceremony for the 11th Gwangyang National Seomjingang Art Competition, hosted by Gwangyang City and organized by the Gwangyang branch of the Korea Fine Arts Association (headed by Park Shinae), was held on the 9th at the Grand Theater of the Gwangyang Culture and Arts Center.
More than 200 people attended the ceremony, including Mayor Jung Inhwa, the president of the Korea Federation of Arts and Culture Organizations, the president of the Jeonnam Fine Arts Association, leaders of cultural and arts organizations, award recipients, and their families. An exhibition of the winning works was also held after the awards ceremony.

View original imageThis year, a total of 873 works were submitted from across the country, including Seoul, Busan, Daegu, Daejeon, Gwangju, and Jeju. After a rigorous judging process, 449 individuals received awards. By category, the winners included 120 in Western painting, 92 in watercolor, 49 in Korean painting, 25 in folk painting, 4 in wood carving, 69 in calligraphy, 31 in literary painting, and 59 in calligraphy.
The grand prize was awarded to artists Byungsuk Min (Western painting), Eunsuk Hwang (watercolor), Wonsik Myung (calligraphy), and Jeongeun Song (calligraphy). In addition, five artists received the top excellence award, ten received the excellence award, sixteen received the special award, fifteen received the corporate award, 102 were selected for the special selection, and 297 were selected for the honorable mention.
In her congratulatory remarks, Park Shinae, head of the Gwangyang branch of the Korea Fine Arts Association, said, "I am deeply grateful to Gwangyang City for its generous support, which has enabled us to hold the Seomjingang Art Competition every year with outstanding artists from across the country. I will continue to do my best to help Gwangyang grow as a city filled with the fragrance of art."
In his congratulatory address, Mayor Jung Inhwa stated, "Since its inception in 2015, the Seomjingang Art Competition, now in its 11th year, has been a valuable event that has broadened the foundation of culture and the arts in Gwangyang. We will continue to build an artistic ecosystem where artists can enjoy the joy of creation and further enhance Gwangyang's status as a city of culture."

Based on its solid cultural infrastructure, including the Jeonnam Provincial Art Museum and the Gwangyang Art Warehouse, Gwangyang City is introducing a new International Media Art Festival this year. The city also plans to continue enhancing its urban brand value by integrating culture, tourism, and industry.
