View original imageThe National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage under the Cultural Heritage Administration will sign a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Ministry of National Defense Agency for KIA Recovery & Identification at 11:00 a.m. on July 22, 2025, at the Conservation Science Center seminar room in Yuseong-gu, Daejeon, for the preservation of relics excavated from Korean War fallen soldiers.
The agreement includes: ▲ scientific conservation treatment of relics excavated from Korean War fallen soldiers; ▲ joint use of facilities and equipment for scientific investigation and research on the relics; ▲ technical and personnel exchanges, consultation, and joint academic activities for relic conservation; and ▲ cooperation in sharing information related to relics and conservation treatment, promoting achievements, and securing budgets.
As part of a government collaboration project between the Cultural Heritage Administration and the Ministry of National Defense, the institute has preserved approximately 1,300 relics excavated from the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) since 2020. Since the conclusion of the collaboration project in 2023, the institute has continued to preserve items that require urgent conservation or are large and technically demanding.

The Cultural Heritage Administration stated, "We plan to improve the process so that the relics of identified fallen soldiers are preserved collectively, ensuring safer preservation and utilization for each individual. Through precise scientific investigation, we also aim to further uncover identification information and details about the circumstances at the time of death that remain in the relics."
