Honoring the Dedication of Korean Scientists and Engineers Worldwide
Celebrating the 80th Anniversary of Liberation and Paving the Way for the Future of Science and Technology
An event has been organized to honor and reflect on the dedication and hard work of Korean scientists and engineers around the world who have contributed to the development of Korea through science and technology.
On July 9, the Ministry of Science and ICT announced that the "2025 World Korean Scientists and Engineers Convention" will be held for three days at the Korea Science and Technology Center in Seoul, running until July 11.
The 2025 World Korean Scientists and Engineers Convention is hosted by the Ministry of Science and ICT and organized by the Korean Federation of Science and Technology Societies and 19 overseas Korean scientists and engineers associations. This convention serves as a venue for Korean scientists and engineers from all over the world to gather in one place, share their research achievements, and explore visions for the future of science and technology.
This year's convention is particularly significant as it marks the 80th anniversary of Korea's liberation. It aims to reflect on the dedication and contributions of Korean scientists and engineers worldwide who have supported Korea's development through science and technology, and to carry on this legacy by laying the groundwork for securing national sovereignty in science and technology and advancing into the future amid global technological competition.
On the first day of the convention, July 8, prior to the main events, participants visited the National Cemetery to reaffirm the responsibilities and mission of scientists and engineers. In the evening, a special lecture and a welcome dinner were held.
The opening ceremony was attended by Korean scientists and engineers from both Korea and abroad, Minister Sangim Yoo of the Ministry of Science and ICT, and Chairman Myung Oh of the convention. A video message from President Jaemyung Lee was also played. In addition, Professor Cheolseong Hwang of Seoul National University, who was selected for the 2025 Korea's Top Scientist and Engineer Award, received a presidential certificate and a prize of 300 million won. This was followed by a keynote lecture and talk concert on the present and future of AI, delivered by Professor Suin Lee of the University of Washington.
Over the next two days, under the theme "Opening the Future with Convergent Science and Technology," a variety of discussions will take place among domestic and overseas scientists and engineers on a total of five subtopics: building a sustainable society based on convergent technologies; next-generation advanced transportation; the global expansion of K-advanced science and technology; nurturing future talent and leadership innovation; and international cooperation strategies to address climate and environmental issues.
