Chungnam's Economy Soars in 30 Years of Local Autonomy: GRDP Quadruples, Exports Jump Eightfold
GRDP: 30 Trillion Won in 1995 to 134.3 Trillion Won in 2023
Exports: $11.6 Billion to $92.6 Billion Last Year
Population: 1.85 Million in 1995 to 2.23 Million in 2025... Increase of 380,000
Since the revival of locally elected governments in 1995, Chungnam's Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) has increased fourfold and its export volume has grown by approximately eight times over the past 30 years.
In addition, the trade surplus has expanded by more than eight times, and the population has steadily increased, rising by more than 380,000 people.
According to statistical data released by the Chungnam Provincial Government on June 25, the GRDP rose from 30 trillion won in 1995 to 134.3 trillion won in 2023, a 4.5-fold increase over 28 years.
Exports jumped from $11.6 billion in 1995 to $92.6 billion last year, while imports expanded from $4.8 billion to $41.1 billion over the same period.
The trade balance rose from a surplus of $6.7 billion in 1995 to $51.4 billion last year, an increase of more than eightfold.
Port cargo volume also grew from 22 million tons in 1995 to 183 million tons last year. The number of businesses increased from 127,546 in 2006 to 276,134 in 2023.
The population of Chungnam increased from 1.85 million in 1995 to 2.23 million in 2025, a rise of more than 380,000 people. Additionally, the combined budgets of the province and its cities and counties grew from 3.6 trillion won in 1995 to 26 trillion won in 2025, expanding the fiscal foundation for regional development by more than seven times.
The number of hospitals and clinics increased nearly threefold, from 882 in 1995 to 2,462 in 2025. However, the number of general hospitals capable of treating severe cases grew by only three, from 10 to 13, indicating a need to further strengthen the medical infrastructure.
Other social infrastructure also expanded steadily. The number of registered vehicles surged from 290,000 in 1995 to 1.27 million in 2024, and the number of public libraries increased from 23 to 65.
To address climate change and air pollution, the number of air quality monitoring stations increased from one in 1995 to 75 in 2023, and the adoption of electric and hydrogen vehicles also surged.
The number of electric vehicles grew from 140 in 2015 to 33,651 in 2023, while hydrogen vehicles increased from 21 to 1,625, reflecting the spread of eco-friendly vehicles. Furthermore, the share of renewable energy supply rose from 0.07% in 1995 to 3.7% in 2023.
Shin Dongheon, Director of the Chungnam Provincial Government's Autonomy and Safety Office, said, "Over the past 30 years since the revival of local autonomy, Chungnam has led the Korean economy, and we are now pursuing development strategies with a vision for the next 50 and 100 years." He added, "Attracting domestic and foreign companies, leading a carbon-neutral economy, and building the Bay Valley are all initiatives that will further brighten Chungnam's future."
