The establishment demolished this time was a large-scale venue with more than 40 rooms and a living area, serving as a symbolic location that demonstrated the organized nature of prostitution in the area over the years.
Mayor Kim shared his thoughts, stating, "When we first began pushing for the closure of the red-light district, there were many concerns and much opposition, but now we are finally beginning to see tangible results."
Since this year, Paju City has been purchasing prostitution establishments and demolishing them to fundamentally block prostitution. In addition, by creating new spaces for citizen education and other purposes on the cleared sites, an anti-prostitution atmosphere has been spreading within the district, effectively blocking the entry of sex buyers.
So far, the city has purchased and demolished a total of six buildings. On the cleared sites, it has created exhibition spaces, the 'Gender Equality Paju' anti-prostitution education center, and a community space for residents called 'Healing Garden.' The remaining one building has been repurposed as a patrol base and parking lot, and is being used as a venue for the citizens' 'Owl Activity' campaign to block sex buyers.
Paju City plans to continue purchasing and demolishing each prostitution establishment, in addition to the six buildings already acquired, with the goal of achieving the complete closure of the red-light district within this year.
