National Museum of Korean Contemporary History to Hold Talk Concert for 80th Anniversary of Liberation: "Daejeon·Daegu Edition"
Daejeon and Daegu in the Immediate Post-Liberation Era Through Food and Railways
Rapid Growth as Railway Hubs During the Japanese Occupation
Presentations and Discussions with Regional Experts
The National Museum of Korean Contemporary History announced on June 23 that, in celebration of the 80th anniversary of Korea's Liberation, it will hold a talk concert titled "Modern City Chronicles" on the theme of cities at the museum's third-floor multipurpose hall on June 27.
This concert will focus on "The Urban Landscape in the Immediate Post-Liberation Period as Seen Through Food and Railways," highlighting the historical changes in Daejeon and Daegu and examining the lives of their citizens.
Daejeon experienced rapid growth as a railway-centered city during the Japanese occupation, and after Liberation and during the Korean War, it played a crucial role as a hub for food supply and logistics. Daegu, in the immediate aftermath of Liberation, became a major destination for displaced people from northern regions via the railway, leading to a population increase. It is also historically significant as the origin of social resistance (the October Uprising) in 1946 due to food shortages.
The talk concert will feature presentations by regional experts Kim Minseok (Chungnam National University) and Kim Sangsuk (Sungkonghoe University), as well as a discussion with Heo Youngran (University of Ulsan).
The museum will continue to hold these events in succession, concluding with the final concert "Pyongyang·Kaesong Edition" on June 30. Visitors who attend two or more sessions, including the "Busan" edition held on May 30, will receive a special commemorative gift.
