Ulsan City Launches Full-Scale Project to Install Road Name LED Landscape Lighting on Women's Safe Routes Home
Samsanjung-ro in Nam-gu Reborn as the Nation's First “Shining Street” with Address Information Facilities
Selected as an Ulbusim Life Plus Project... A Symbolic Example of Creating a Safer Urban Environment
Ulsan City is taking the lead in creating a safer urban environment by becoming the first in the nation to install road name LED landscape lighting on Women’s Safe Routes Home.
The city is officially launching the “Women’s Safe Route Home Road Name LED Landscape Lighting Installation Project” to prevent nighttime crime and to raise awareness of address information facilities.
The project site was selected through a joint on-site inspection with the Ulsan Nambu Police Station, which assessed local characteristics and designated the area around “Samsanjung-ro 6beon-gil” in Nam-gu as the pilot project location.
On June 18, Ulsan City transformed this approximately 3km stretch into a “Shining Street” by integrating five types of address information facilities: LED road name signs, LED base number plates, luminous building number plates, and road name promotional lighting (logo projectors) along the Women’s Safe Route Home.
The total project cost was 162 million won, funded by the Fire Safety Grant Tax. Installation of the first section, “Samsanjung-ro 6beon-gil,” began on May 8 and will be fully completed by the end of June.
This year, the city additionally secured 120 million won in Fire Safety Grant Tax through a supplementary budget and plans to install more address information facilities in the second phase, covering Dalsam-ro and Hwaham-ro.
This project, in particular, has been selected as the second “Ulbusim Life Plus” initiative?a key citizen-centered project of the 8th popularly elected administration?and is being recognized as a symbolic example of efforts to create a safer urban environment.
A city official stated, “This LED landscape lighting project is the first in the nation to integrate address information facilities, illuminating Women’s Safe Routes Home and achieving triple benefits: preventing nighttime crime, improving the urban landscape, and raising awareness of address information facilities. Based on performance analysis, we plan to expand this initiative to Women’s Safe Routes Home throughout Ulsan in stages starting in 2026.”
Currently, there are 38 Women’s Safe Routes Home and crime prevention zones designated by the Ulsan Metropolitan Police Agency. Each district and county focuses intensive management on crime-prone areas according to local characteristics.
Ulsan City plans to use this project as a springboard to accelerate the realization of “Safe City Ulsan,” where citizens can feel secure at night.
