Easing of Negotiating Bloc Requirements Reaffirmed
Emphasis on Prosecutorial Reform and Insurrection Recovery Support Fund
The Democratic Party of Korea and the Cho Kuk Innovation Party have confirmed a consensus on the establishment of the Special Investigation Committee on Anti-Constitutional Acts (Banheon Special Committee) and the easing of requirements for negotiating blocs.
On June 17, Kim Byungki, acting leader and floor leader of the Democratic Party, paid a courtesy visit to Seo Wangjin, floor leader of the Cho Kuk Innovation Party.
Baek Sunhee, a lawmaker from the Cho Kuk Innovation Party, explained regarding the meeting, "Floor leader Seo proposed normalizing negotiating blocs, establishing the Special Investigation Committee on Anti-Constitutional Acts, and forming a consultative body among the five opposition parties, especially a discussion table with the Democratic Party." She added, "Regarding negotiating blocs, there was a declaration from the roundtable, and the two parties confirmed that they are aware of it." Baek further conveyed, "Both parties recognize the need for the Special Investigation Committee on Anti-Constitutional Acts, so they agreed to meet frequently in the future to discuss how to proceed in detail."
Kim Hyunjung, spokesperson for the Democratic Party's parliamentary group, said, "Acting leader Kim emphasized the importance of communication," adding, "He said that communication among party lawmakers is important, but so is communication with opposition parties. There was a previous agreement to hold regular weekly meetings with the People Power Party, and in that context, he agreed on the need for frequent or regular communication with other opposition parties as well."
In response to reporters' questions about how much to lower the seat threshold for negotiating blocs, spokesperson Kim said, "There was no agreement on a specific number of seats," and explained, "There was related discussion at the parliamentary group meeting after the roundtable. Since the floor leader has changed, we plan to continue consultations with the Cho Kuk Innovation Party."
Previously, floor leader Seo stated, "We need to prepare measures to implement the declaration of the five opposition parties' roundtable announced on April 15 and continue follow-up discussions," and proposed "regularizing a consultative body of the five reform parties in the parliament, including the Democratic Party and the Cho Kuk Innovation Party." In addition, floor leader Seo emphasized a 25 trillion won support fund for restoring from insurrection and prosecutorial reform.
