The Urban Farmer School, operated by the Yangsan Agricultural Technology Center, is an educational program designed to train urban farmers and beginner agriculturists.
The program is offered every year in the first and second halves. The class size is set at 20 participants, and each session runs for three months. To complete the course, students must attend at least 80% of the 30-hour curriculum.
This year, the Urban Farmer School began its first half of the program in March with a capacity of 20 participants. The curriculum was organized with beginner-friendly content, including an introduction to urban agriculture, social services and therapeutic agriculture, and indoor hydroponic plant cultivation.
Notably, this year’s program enhanced its effectiveness through practical lessons at the Hwajeri Family Love Garden, where participants engaged in weekend hands-on farming experiences, such as preparing the soil and cultivating crops. Through the Urban Farmer School, graduates have laid the foundation to grow into more specialized urban farmers in the future.
Since its inception in 2009, the Urban Farmer School has produced approximately 660 graduates. The second half of this year’s program is scheduled to begin in September and will be offered as an evening course for working professionals.
An official from the Agricultural Technology Center stated, "Urban agriculture education provides a valuable opportunity for citizens interested in agriculture to easily access the field," adding, "We hope that through urban agriculture, people will be able to enjoy the abundance and peace that nature brings into their daily lives."
