This year's Memorial Day ceremony, held shortly after the launch of the new administration, will be attended by approximately 4,000 people, including national merit recipients, bereaved families, key government officials, representatives from various sectors, and citizens. In addition, the families of the late Commander Park Jinwoo, the late Major Lee Taehun, the late Master Sergeant Yoon Dongkyu, and the late Master Sergeant Kang Shinwon, who died in last month's Navy maritime patrol aircraft crash, have been invited to the ceremony. The family of the late Fire Captain Lim Sungcheol, who died in the Seogwipo tangerine warehouse fire in December 2023, will also be present.
The ceremony will begin with a video showing the raising of flags at half-mast at national cemeteries across the country. At exactly 10 a.m., a siren will sound for remembrance, followed by a moment of silence with public participation, a memorial video, the national ceremony and floral tribute, a memorial performance, presentation of certificates to national merit recipients, a memorial address, a themed performance, and the singing of the Memorial Day song.
The memorial video will feature the reading of tributes engraved on the tombstones of national merit recipients. The readings will be performed by actors Kim Gapsoo and Go Dooshim. During the national ceremony, the pledge of allegiance to the flag will be read by Master Sergeant Choi Mungil of the Marine Corps Training and Education Command. Master Sergeant Choi's great-grandfather was an independence activist, and his father is a national merit recipient.
