Police to Intensively Crack Down on 'Memorial Day Street Racers'... "Will Track Down Offenders with Evidence" (Comprehensive)
"Ensuring Public Awareness
That Street Racing Will Inevitably Be Punished"
The police plan to conduct intensive crackdowns on illegal activities such as reckless and dangerous driving across Seoul during the Memorial Day period.
The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency announced on June 5 that it will carry out concentrated crackdowns on illegal activities to eradicate reckless and dangerous driving throughout Seoul before and after Memorial Day on June 6. The police will strengthen patrols in areas where street racers are expected to appear, based on prior intelligence gathering and analysis of reported cases. For reckless and dangerous driving, the police will mobilize traffic crime investigation teams and other units to enforce the law.
A total of 358 traffic-related police officers will be deployed for this operation. The police emphasized that in cases where on-site apprehension is difficult, they will collect evidence and conduct follow-up investigations to arrest those responsible for illegal acts.

The police have also focused on cracking down on street racers during late-night hours on Memorial Day in previous years. For example, on Memorial Day last year, police in the Chungnam region detected 77 traffic law violations. At that time, the Chungnam Provincial Police Agency deployed 296 personnel, including traffic and local police as well as a mobile patrol unit, and 63 vehicles to physically block locations where street racers were expected to gather.
Joint dangerous acts and dangerous driving are punishable under the Road Traffic Act by up to one year in prison or a fine of up to 5 million won. Illegal vehicle modifications are punishable under the Motor Vehicle Management Act by up to one year in prison or a fine of up to 10 million won. Installing illegal mufflers is punishable under the Motor Vehicle Management Act by up to one year in prison or a fine of up to 1 million won. Obscuring license plates is also punishable by up to one year in prison or a fine of up to 10 million won.
